2011 Philharmonic Concert Production
The 2011 version of Company featured Neil Patrick Harris as the central character. (One reviewer pointed out that, though Robert is ostensibly straight, Harris was part of a long line of gay actors to play him - part of an ongoing conversation about the character's sexuality.) Critics responded more positively to the acting and staging in this production than others, noting that the production felt sexy and made Robert's lack of definitive personality a part of the production rather than an accident - one review notes that the production leans into Sondheim's assessment of Robert as more camera than character. Though the star-studded cast was generally well received, reviewers continue to note the musical's datedness, referring to it as a "period piece."
